AKUA transforms reading comprehension practice into engaging, adaptive games that challenge students to engage all ten RTTM cognitive text structures — from identifying the main idea to constructing full articulation statements — building mastery at every level of the reading comprehension framework.
What is AKUA?
AKUA is the interactive game portal within the HERU Platform. It guides students through all ten cognitive text structures of the RTTM framework — Main Idea, Theme, Cause & Effect, Compare, Contrast, Symbols, Student Judgment, Author's Purpose, Proof & Evidence, and Full Articulation — each with its own formula and scaffolded game format.
Passages are organized by RTTM Level (1–10) and difficulty tier, with both narrative and informational genres represented. Students receive immediate feedback and build fluency through repeated, scaffolded practice across every level of the comprehension framework.

How AKUA Works
Students are presented with a short 3-sentence passage — narrative or informational — at their assigned RTTM level and difficulty tier.
Each of the 10 RTTM text structures has its own formula. For example, Level 1 (Main Idea) asks students to identify the strongest noun and verb to construct: "The [verb-ing] of the [noun]." Every level follows this same structured formula approach — but with its own unique cognitive demand.
The system validates the constructed response against the correct formula output for that text structure, provides immediate feedback, and tracks progress across all 10 levels over time.
